Installation & Sub-structure Guide
Proper installation guarantees the longevity of your L-Shape coping. Below are the key engineering guidelines required for laying pre-fabricated rebated coping.
Preparing the Concrete Pool Beam
The concrete shell structure of the pool must be fully cured (typically minimum 28 days) and dimensionally stable. Ensure the top face of the pool beam is perfectly flat, free from dust, latency, formwork oil, or curing compounds.
- Leveling Tolerance: The concrete beam must be leveled to a tolerance of <3mm over a 3-meter span.
- Waterproofing Membrane: Apply a high-performance, cementitious waterproofing slurry over the top beam prior to applying adhesive.
- Mechanical Cleaning: Grind down high spots and patch low areas with polymer-modified repair mortar to ensure uniform thickness.
100% Adhesive Transfer (No Hollow Spots)
Porcelain pool coping must be installed using the double-buttering method. Apply a premium, highly deformable C2S1 or C2S2 tile adhesive to both the substrate concrete and the back of the porcelain tile.
- Double-Buttering: Use a 10mm notched trowel on the concrete beam and scrape a thin, flat layer of adhesive on the back of the coping unit.
- Zero Air Voids: Hollow pockets behind the rebate or tile body will collect water and cause cracking under freeze-thaw cycles. Press tile firmly, shifting it slightly to collapse adhesive ridges.
- Drop Apron Coverage: Pay special attention to the inner miter angle, ensuring adhesive is packed solid behind the vertical drop apron face.
Mitigating Thermal Expansion
Outdoor surfaces experience massive temperature shifts, causing tiles to expand and contract. Rigid structures with no joints will buckle or pop loose over time.
- Grout Joint Width: Lay coping pieces with a minimum 3mm to 4mm grout space. Never butt-joint coping tiles together.
- Flexible Grout: Use polymer-modified cementitious grouts (CG2 class) or chemical-resistant epoxy grouts designed for wet and saline conditions.
- Expansion Joints: Install a flexible polyurethane or silicone movement joint every 3 to 4 meters, and at all pool corner turns, to absorb structural stresses.
